I bought two saws at the car boot for 50p, then went up the tip to see if I could get my hands on a pipe for my little gas bottle stove. Ended up with two more files and ... something I've been looking for for a few years now; an old draw knife. The two files and draw knife cost a whopping £1!
I'll have to turn new handles for the draw knife, but that's what I call fun.
The long single-handle saw has a blade length of 42". The two-handle saw is shorter, but it's also sharper. Anyone on here who likes these sort of saws will be horrified to think that I bought them to make a few kitchen knives from. Yes, I am thinking of cutting knife blanks from that saw. Would that be a terrible thing to do? The teeth are blunt and they have no kerf.
After touching the drawknife blade with a wire wheel, I found some markings. I can only just make out one of them, but not the other:
This is the only marking I could find on the big saw:
Considering that the two files and draw knife cost me £1, but I found 21p on the ground at the tip, and the two saws only cost 50p, I'd saw today was a rather good day.
I would imagine they are quite high quality. The name Sorby is a well known one amongst wood turners, but mostly under Robert Sorby these days. The Company changed the initials a few times, but looks like it kept the Sorby surname. One source says it is now a trade mark of Turner, Naylor and Marples, who are also widely known manufacturers.
The jester is actually "Punch" (from Punch and Judy I assume)
Wow, thanks for all the info Adam. That's great news. I just need to take it easy getting it cleaned up, rehandled and then sharpened.
No problem Bernie. Some great finds you found there. I always prefer old tools to modern ones. If they've survived to this day, and are still usable (or usable after minimal work) then they must have been well made. At least that's my logic anyway lol
