    Heard quite a few cuckoos. There's one I hear most days on the opposite side of the field - can't be more than a couple hundred yards away. I've lurked around those trees, waiting for him. But still no luck.

    At a distance they are easily mistaken for Woodpidgeon , close up you can see the whiteish bars on their wings. I have actually seen two together on the fringes of Hamsterley Forrest a couple of years ago.

    look closely for the bars long their breasts
