    .308 brass cartridge whistle

Inspired by Fish's fabulous shotgun cartridge whistles I looked up if somebody on the internet has ever tried making a whistle from brass rifle cartridges. And yes of course...I'm not the first. I had a couple of spent .308 cartridges which I don't shoot myself.

After trying various methods I finally managed to create one with a quite sharp chirp! I used a triangular metalfile to create the opening. I was astonished how difficult it is to place the little piece of wood in the mouthpiece at the right length and angle to achieve the right tweet. Fiddly business! I used express glue to fix the piece of wood in the mouthpiece.
    But here's the result!

Next I'm gonna try making one or two from my own 7x64 and 7x65R cartridges. They are little bit longer than the .308's and the "mouthpiece" is only 7mm wide.

    Cheers, Primerib

P.S. If you want to try this wait until your wife or girlfriend are out of the house. Mine nearly kicked me out coz I don't have a garage or similar to work in and testing the whistle till the woodpiece was set right got to her nerves.

Very nice! Last time I was at the shooting range, I picked up some spent casings that had been missed by the broom. I'm hoping to do a project similar to this some time.
    Thanks for sharing!

    Uuuuhuhuhu...

This time I even surprised myself how nice this turned out! I drilled out the ignition cap of the cartridge to ad a lanyard of some sort. I had fiddled around with a piece of paracord with two buttonknots at the end which I threaded through the hole at the bottom. To give it a lil contrast and a little hunting touch another buttonknot with orange gutted paracord makes a nice junction tothe brass butt of the cartridge. I left it to be movable so I can slide it up to the end of the lanyard if I want (hanging it somewhere or clasping it to a carbine hook.
