    Question Birch Trees

Sometimes you see thicker/taller birch trees that especially in the bottom half have little smooth bark surface left and more resemble the bark of an ash tree.

Out of interest, I just wondered if anyone knew the cause of this? normal aging or a disease or some kind?

Hopefully you can understand what referring to

    I second JonnyP .
It happens to Chesnuts, Elms, Apples, Poplars...practically all trees - just the natural process of aging.

Trees are truly fascinating beings - no two are exactly alike, and they all have their own personalities.
