The consistency of badger poop is dependant on diet, they eat a lot of slugs, worms and vegetable matter which produces a rather wet poop. They will, however, eat pretty much anything so you'll find varying types. Occasionally you will find them on the ground and not in a latrine.
Latrines provide a more permanent territorial boundary marker in that the droppings aren't washed/eroded away so quickly. The scent doesn't carry so well though.
A Fox marks prominent features - ideally a point raised above ground level - as this spreads the scent over a further distance.
