i got the fiskars 600 hatchet and itīs really a great tool. not really for fine carving, since i convexed the edge of mine, but a superb splitter for small to medium sized wood.
a good source for high quality, sturdy leather are mediaval markets. i got two pieces of 30 x 40cm 4mm thick leather in a light brown colour for 16 euro, which would be about 20 us dollars.
yes with your cooking gear, i would better go with stainless steel for those exact reasons. but theses small tins are great for your firelighting stuff like tinder.
