I can imagine that might work well, but it does sound like quite a bit of effort and preparation?

Just bought a steel firestarter myself :) Instead of charcoaled cotton as tinder, I use waxed hempthread. I blend beeswax with pine-pitch and a smalltea spoon of flax-oil. This makes my wax softer and stickyer. I put a good amount of wax on the hemp as this also makes it waterproof :)

When used as tinder, I untwine some 5-cm of the thread, making a "hairball" of fibers, with lots of air in between. In the of the fiberball center I put a small piece of wax (or resin). Then I strike my firestarter - and voila instant fire ...
