Hobo Stove with Meths Pop-Can Cook System

E-mail Print PDF

Today we take a look at Justin's homemade Hobo Stove, also looking at a Meths Pop-Can stoves as an alternative, Justin takes us through all the modifications and tips in using a cook system like this.

Have a look at what user Rick did with this video, he combined this idea with our video where we made a camp cooking oven (recycling an old beer-keg) to make a meat-smoker & oven. Have a look at Ricks video here.

Excellent video on the hobo stove and using it with a pop can stove. I've had my little pop can stove for a while, however it is a variant of the one you show here called the penny stove. it uses a penny(I use a 5p coin) to regulate the flow of alcohol gas to the jets, a bit more complicated but great fun to make and use - Information about home made alcohol stoves can be found at zenstoves.net. Also a great place to find out about camping stoves in general - the wood burning section has some great ideas about woodgas stoves made from cans. I've just built my first and find it to be very effective with little ash or smoke produced - everything burns down to nothing!!!

Justin, I went out today to try out my dog food tin hobo stove which is 'copied' from the one in your video. It went really well and I made a lovely cup of hot choccy. Though I did have to face the entrance into the strong breeze to get it to burn properly. Have you tried enlarging the bottom holes at all and if so has it made a difference to how yours burns?

I too have a pop can stove and it works great. I'm still looking to make my hobo stove though as you have. This video has given me an idea and I'm excited about the possibilities.

Keep up the good work. I really enjoy the videos and photos you've take the time to put up, not to mention this wonderful website. Thanks!

P.S.- Keep up the approach you take when you do these... it's very relaxing and very informational!

This is a great video. I only just learned about using my pop-can stove inside another stove (in my case the Nimblewill Nomad). Your instruction is relaxed, effortless, and easy listening and watching. I really enjoyed watching it. Thank you.
